A new investment or an existing arrangement
Say whether you’re considering investing, reviewing investments already held or asking about an ongoing advice arrangement. Describe the goal and approximate timescale, including any point when you expect to need access to the money.
For an existing arrangement, explain what prompted your question. Your priorities may have changed, charges may need clarification or you may want to understand how the arrangement fits a wider plan.
Questions about suitability and service scope
An initial enquiry can ask what an investment review would include, how costs would be explained and what ongoing support would involve. Distinguish a one-off review from a request for continuing advice.
If the money is linked to retirement or another financial goal, mention that connection. Explain any uncertainty about accepting losses or needing access, without choosing investments on the strength of general descriptions.
Check a provider before proceeding
The Financial Conduct Authority, the UK financial services regulator, explains how to check provider authorisation (fca.org.uk). Before proceeding with regulated advice, check the provider and the permissions relevant to the work proposed.
For your first message, leave out account numbers, holdings statements and identity documents. You can describe the arrangements in broad terms.
Send an investment advice enquiry with the purpose of the money, your timescale and the questions you want to raise.
